Jessica Hull, the executive director of communication and community engagement at Roseville City School District (RCSD), is deeply committed to addressing chronic absenteeism. Amidst a nationwide surge in absenteeism since the COVID-19 pandemic, RCSD witnessed a significant rise from fewer than 1 in 10 students chronically absent in 2019 to about 1 in 4 students in 2022. Recognizing the importance of attendance, Hull and other school officials embarked on a focused effort to share a crucial statistic with parents: missing just two days a month of school from TK through eighth grade equates to a full year of missed learning by high school. This targeted approach resulted in a notable 6% decrease in chronic absenteeism from 2022 to 2023, with average daily attendance also showing improvement. Hull emphasizes the importance of addressing absenteeism among staff and teachers, highlighting the role of relationships in motivating students to attend school and fostering a conducive learning environment.
