The Alberta Teachers’ Association President, Jason Schilling, has expressed confusion over new provincial policies banning cellphone use in classrooms starting this fall. While the ban takes effect on September 1, schools have until January 1 to implement their own specific rules. Schilling noted the discrepancy between these dates and concerns from teachers about handling expensive phones without clear procedures. Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides stated that while the ban starts in the fall, local schools will have time to establish their policies, including storage, roles, responsibilities, and consequences. The new regulations follow similar restrictions recently introduced in other provinces.
