Extraordinary’ Joseph Coelho Novel Wins Carnegie Medal for Children’s Writing

Joseph Coelho has made history by becoming the first Black British writer to win the Yoto Carnegie medal for children’s books. He received the award for his novel-in-verse, “The Boy Lost in the Maze,” praised for its descriptive storytelling. Coelho expressed his deep connection to the novel and gratitude for the recognition from librarians, calling the award particularly special. Aaron Becker also received accolades, winning the Yoto Carnegie medal for illustration for his wordless picture book, “The Tree and the River,” known for its universal appeal and visual storytelling. Both winners received £5,000 and a commissioned golden medal, with additional recognition from young readers in school and library reading groups.
