Finley Hodge’s experience with reading difficulties highlights a major issue in education: early intervention. In his case, problems weren’t identified until Grade 2, and by then, he was struggling significantly. His mother, Andrée Hodge, criticized the “wait to fail” approach, where children with reading challenges were not supported until much later. In response to such issues, Calgary has implemented a new reading initiative. Over the past four years, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) has retrained 1,000 teachers to conduct systematic screening in kindergarten and, starting this year, in Grades 1 to 3. These screenings break down reading skills into smaller components to pinpoint where students struggle, allowing for early intervention.
