Caring for children in their early years is a crucial but undervalued job in the U.S., with child care workers earning less than animal caretakers and dressing room attendants. Two recent reports highlight the low wages and poor treatment of early childhood educators. The first report, the Early Childhood Workforce Index 2024, reveals that these workers earn a median wage of $13.07 per hour, with 13% living in poverty. Additionally, 43% rely on public assistance, and there are significant pay disparities based on race and age group, with Black educators earning about $8,000 less than their white counterparts.
