An 18-year-old former student (identified as John Doe) has filed a lawsuit against Chicago Public Schools regarding sexual abuse he endured at age 15 while attending Dunbar Vocational Career Academy. The lawsuit alleges that Tywain Carter, a 29-year-old security guard, sexually assaulted the student daily in November and December 2021. Carter reportedly targeted the victim on his first day as a transfer student, promised the teen’s mother he would look after him, and frequently removed him from class to a faculty computer lab. Carter pleaded guilty in 2023 to sexually assaulting John Doe and abusing another student, receiving a prison sentence exceeding 10 years. The lawsuit names six Dunbar staff members who allegedly knew of but failed to report Carter’s policy violations to proper authorities.
