At the start of the 2024-2025 school year, state-appointed superintendent Mike Miles reported that over 800 uncertified teachers had been hired in the district. He emphasized that uncertified teachers can be effective, noting that many have previous experience in roles like Teacher Apprentices and Learning Coaches. Despite challenges in retaining quality teachers, he mentioned only 30 teacher vacancies, a significant improvement from past years when vacancies exceeded 600. However, the district has faced scrutiny due to a recent certification scandal, where five HISD employees were charged in a scheme that falsified credentials to allow unqualified teachers to work in local schools. This scheme reportedly cost the district over $1 million.
