The Philadelphia School District is seeking community input on its facilities master planning process, which involves potential building closings, new construction, and school relocations. Superintendent Tony B. Watlington Sr. announced a series of listening sessions aimed at gathering feedback from residents about the future of the district, which currently operates 216 schools, many of which are old and underutilized. With an average school age of 73 years and a significant unmet facilities need of around $8 billion, the district is exploring how to better use its buildings, which have the capacity for 180,000 students but currently serve about 116,000.
