Gregg, 14 at the time, shot her mother, Ashley Smylie, 40, with a .357 Magnum pistol taken from her parents’ bedroom. The shooting occurred after her mother was searching Gregg’s room for vape pens. Gregg then waited to ambush her stepfather, Heath Smylie, 39, when he returned home. Heath Smylie survived, wrestled the gun away, and called 911, stating “She killed her mom.” Evidence showed Gregg messaged her stepfather asking when he’d be home after shooting her mother. Gregg was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
