February 21 2024- Sudan is facing a dire humanitarian crisis, particularly affecting children, according to Mandeep O’Brien in an interview with UN News. Ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over the past 10 months have led to the world’s largest child displacement crisis, with over 3.5 million children seeking safer locations. More than 7.4 million young Sudanese lack access to safe drinking water, exposing them to waterborne diseases. Additionally, almost two million urgently need lifesaving vaccines. Sudan is grappling with one of the highest rates of child malnutrition globally, with over three million children under five suffering from acute malnutrition, and 700,000 at risk of death without immediate medical intervention. The situation is described as a “living nightmare” for children.
