Teachers in Zimbabwe demand Minimum Salary of US $1,260 Per Month Amid Economic Hardship

Zimbabwe is currently facing economic challenges, including high inflation and a significant depreciation of its local currency, Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG). The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz) has criticized President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration for inadequate wages and is demanding a minimum salary of US$1,260 for teachers. During protests, Artuz highlighted the government’s recent expenditure of US$16 million on luxury vehicles for traditional leaders, arguing that these funds should instead be used to provide fair wages for educators. The union also pointed out ongoing issues such as an unfavorable working environment, unmet commitments to professional development, and violations of labor rights, which are driving teachers away from the profession.
