UN Secretary-General António Guterres has joined the widespread condemnation of Ecuador’s raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas. Guterres expressed alarm at the forced entry, highlighting that such actions violate the sanctity of diplomatic premises and hinder international relations. Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa ordered the raid as part of his anti-crime campaign, sparking intense backlash across Latin America. Mexico severed diplomatic ties, and several countries, including Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Argentina, and Uruguay, criticised the raid as a breach of international law and diplomatic norms. Glas had sought asylum in the Mexican embassy since December, citing political persecution.
