UNICEF reports that approximately 20,000 children in Bayelsa State lack access to immunization services due to the challenging terrain and riverine nature of the area. To address this, UNICEF has donated six new water ambulances to enhance immunization coverage and primary care delivery in riverine communities. During the donation ceremony, UNICEF’s Country Representative in Nigeria commended the state government for prioritizing healthcare, especially in primary healthcare. Despite a 20% increase in routine immunization in recent years, there is still a gap to reach 100% coverage. Bayelsa’s Governor, Senator Douye Diri, urged UNICEF to establish a field office in the state to coordinate programs and strengthen partnership for better service delivery.
