In a recent article, Texas high-school teacher Auguste Meyrat coined the term “vegetative education” to describe the current state of education in post-COVID America. He argues that modern classrooms have shifted from rigorous learning with challenging material and frequent grading to easier, more passive activities like fun projects and participation-based grading. This shift has resulted in students displaying low expectations for themselves and their teachers. Many students now prioritize ease and fun over academic effort, leading to a decline in serious learning. The educational environment often lacks rigorous instruction, with students spending time on distractions instead of engaging in meaningful study, contributing to widespread disinterest in learning.
