The number of homeless students in New York City public schools reached a record high during the 2023-24 academic year, largely due to the arrival of thousands of migrant families. According to Advocates for Children of New York, 146,000 students were homeless, a 22% increase from the previous year. This means that 1 in 8 students in the system were homeless, including those living in shelters or doubled up in apartments with other families.
