Parents, Schools Work on Long-Term Solve for Durham Bus Driver Shortage

Durham Public Schools (DPS) is grappling with a school bus driver shortage, leading to a temporary schedule where bus routes operate only four days a week. Parents must find alternative transportation on the fifth day for three weeks until Christmas break. About 73% of the district’s 32,000 students rely on bus service, but with fewer drivers available and increased demand, the situation has become a crisis. DPS aims to hire 60 more drivers immediately and 100 long-term. Meanwhile, the district is working on refining bus routes and improving efficiencies, including adjusting routes and identifying which students actually need the service. The goal is to resolve the issue and make the system more efficient moving forward.
