The debate over who should take high school-level math in eighth grade has sparked national discussion, particularly regarding how to diversify middle school algebra classes while ensuring advanced students master key concepts. Portland Public Schools is exploring this issue through a new experiment in Ernest Yago’s math classroom at Faubion PK-8 School. Yago, an experienced teacher, is piloting a hands-on math and science elective for some seventh graders alongside their regular math classes. This follows similar attempts in cities like New York and San Francisco, which saw no clear improvements in achieving the dual goals of diversity and strong foundational math skills.
