The Benue State government announced that the current recruitment of primary and secondary school teachers will be based strictly on qualification, competence, and capacity to provide quality education. This initiative aims to ensure Benue children can compete globally and elevate the state’s educational standards. Dr. Terna Francis, Director-General of the Benue State Education Quality Assurance Agency (BEQA), revealed that Governor Hyacinth Alia allocated 15 percent of the 2024 budget to education, a historic first for the state. The recruitment process will avoid political biases and instead focus on a needs assessment to determine the exact number of teachers required for various subjects. Dr. Francis emphasized that the new recruitment criteria aim to improve the education system without political interference. Additionally, he reiterated that basic education in Benue State is compulsory and free, warning against any levies that might prevent children from attending school.
