Foreign scholars under Nigeria’s Bilateral Educational Agreement (BEA) Scholarship have appealed to Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman to reverse a recent 56% cut in their allowances. The BEA scholarship facilitates educational exchange between Nigeria and partner countries, and the Federal Scholarship Board oversees it. The Ministry of Education’s decision to reduce allowances, due to economic constraints, has left the scholars stranded in countries like Russia, Morocco, and Algeria struggling financially. They have been without stipends for 13 months, forcing many to take loans for living expenses. In their letter, the scholars emphasized that the reduced allowance is insufficient for basic needs and requested full payment for the past months at the originally promised rate of $500 per month, with remaining funds to be disbursed later.
