February 23 2024- Nineteen parents in Zomba, Malawi, were arrested for failing to look after their children, who ended up as street children. The arrests followed a joint operation by the police, social welfare, gender officers, and the National Intelligence Service to remove street-connected children from the city. A total of 33 street-connected children aged between 10 and 15 were apprehended during the operation. The arrested parents, from Senior Chief Mlumbe’s area in Zomba, have been charged with neglecting to provide necessities for children and are expected to appear in court soon.
