Nigerian Parents Lament as Fuel Price Hike Drag School Fees go up

In Nigeria, schools resumed on September 9, 2024, after a long vacation, but many parents are facing increased costs due to rising fuel prices. This has led to higher school fees and increased transportation costs. In states like Edo and Kano, school openings have been postponed due to the impact of the fuel price hike and other urgent improvements needed for better learning conditions. The recent increase in fuel prices, from 617 to 897 naira per liter, has sharply raised transportation costs, with some families spending over half their salaries on commuting. Schools have also raised fees and, in some cases, canceled school bus services, forcing parents to find alternative transportation solutions. The first term of the academic year will run from September 9 to December 16, 2024.
