Nigeria’s Exclusive Breastfeeding Rate Increases to 34%

As World Breastfeeding Week began, UNICEF and WHO reported that Nigeria’s breastfeeding rate has increased to 34%, up from previous years. Over the past 12 years, the proportion of infants exclusively breastfed for the first six months has risen by over 10%. This improvement moves Nigeria closer to the WHO target of 50% exclusive breastfeeding by 2025. The theme for this year, “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all,” highlights the importance of improving breastfeeding support to reduce health inequity and support maternal and infant health. Despite progress, challenges remain, such as cultural, social, and practical barriers that hinder exclusive breastfeeding.
