The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised concerns about the significant increase in electricity bills for Nigerian universities, which have surged from N5.25 billion monthly to N21.48 billion following a 300% hike in tariffs. This rise, prompted by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s increase in Band A tariff from N68/KWh to N225/KWh, has resulted in annual power costs reaching approximately N275 billion. ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke criticized the Band A classification and called for billing based on actual electricity usage rather than arbitrary categories. He argued that this approach is unfair and that all users should be charged a uniform rate per unit consumed.
