Reduced Homework, Decreased Gaming, and Increased Playtime: Chinese Regulations are Proving Effective in Combating Sedentary Lifestyles

A study from the University of Bristol suggests that China’s regulations aimed at limiting homework and online gaming among children have shown promising results in reducing sedentary behavior. The regulations, implemented in 2021, include restrictions on online gaming during the weekdays and limited playtime on weekends, as well as limits on homework assignments and tutoring hours.

The study, which analyzed data from 7,000 school children, found that sedentary behavior decreased by 13.8% after the regulations were introduced, with children spending less time on screens and more likely to meet guidelines for homework and screen time. The findings highlight the effectiveness of regulatory measures in promoting healthier lifestyles among children, compared to traditional educational approaches.
