States Need to Address the Rising Incidence of Sexual Violence

Sexual and gender-based violence is a significant issue in Nigeria, with reported cases in Lagos alone rising from 3,446 in 2019 to 6,398 in 2023. Despite some progress, such as offender tracking and special courts, much remains to be done. Other states, like Gombe and Akwa Ibom, also report high numbers of cases. While 34 states and the FCT have adopted the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act 2015, implementation is weak. States should enhance reporting systems, establish offender registers, and collaborate with NGOs and law enforcement to ensure justice. Comprehensive sex education and robust support systems are crucial for long-term prevention.
