UNICEF Harps On Safeguarding Life Of Girl-child

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has highlighted that introducing the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in Nigeria will help protect girls from cervical cancer, which is caused by HPV, the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract and responsible for over 95% of cervical cancer cases. Dr. Ijeoma Agbo, a health specialist with UNICEF in Nigeria, discussed this during a two-day media engagement in Lagos, themed “Combatting the Most Preventable Form of Deadly Cancer Affecting Women and Girls through Vaccination.” Organized by the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board and UNICEF, the event emphasized UNICEF’s commitment to the Nigerian girl-child’s future, noting that nearly 15 million HPV vaccines have been procured for the Nigerian government.
