February 29 2024- Joshua Orlinksy, a teacher at Platt High School, observed his students expressing concerns about the way slavery was being taught in the African American/Black and Puerto Rican/Latino elective course. In response to the students’ reservations, Orlinksy, along with student leaders, gathered to address the issue and explore alternatives. Taking student feedback into account, the curriculum shifted its focus from emphasizing the “evils of slavery” to highlighting overlooked historical figures who contributed to positive change. This adjustment aimed to provide a more comprehensive and engaging perspective on African American/Black and Puerto Rican/Latino history.
