March 1 2024- The origins of the decimal point, a fundamental element in modern numerical notation, were previously believed to date back to 1593 when used by German mathematician Christopher Clavius. However, a recent discovery indicates that the decimal point was employed 150 years earlier by a Venetian merchant named Giovanni Bianchini. According to a paper in the journal Historia Mathematica, Bianchini invented a system of decimal fractions in the 1440s, utilizing it in metrology and spherical astronomy.
