We recently took a family stroll around a beautiful reservoir in the Peak District. Walking through the trees we passed a couple pushing a pram containing a baby of around nine months old. Instead of babbling to her parents or looking at the wildlife, the baby’s gaze was fixed on an iPhone, held four inches from her face by a special device attached to the buggy.
Over the last few years it has become common to see small children glued to tiny screens in public places. In fact, when did you last travel on a bus, sit in a doctor’s waiting room or queue in a supermarket without seeing a child holding a device? Some dismiss concerns as an unfounded “moral panic”, but the evidence suggests that the use of screens as babysitters risks permanently harming a generation of children.
