NHC Board of Education to Address Safety and Discipline in Response to Recent Campus Crimes

In Wilmington, N.C., two loaded guns were found on New Hanover County Schools campuses in recent months. In February, a gun was discovered in a preschool student’s bag at the Rachel Freeman School of Engineering, leading to the father’s arrest. In March, a Laney High School student was charged after a school resource officer found a gun in the student’s possession. These incidents and rising crime statistics prompted Board Member Pat Bradford to propose a new committee focused on school safety. Bradford emphasised the need for consistent and enforced policies across all schools.

However, Board Member Stephanie Kraybill opposed the idea, highlighting that a safety team already exists and suggesting that policy changes should be handled within the current framework. The New Hanover County Board of Education will discuss these issues at their meeting on Tuesday, April 9, at 5 p.m.
