‘World’s oldest bread,’ dating back 8,600 years, discovered in Turkey

March 25 2024- Archaeologists at the Çatalhöyük archaeological site in Turkey discovered a largely destroyed oven structure named “Mekan 66” containing organic residue identified as 8,600-year-old uncooked, fermented bread. The find, including wheat, barley, and pea seeds, is considered the oldest bread in the world, indicating early bread-making practices at the site. Ali Umut Türkcan, the head of the Excavation Delegation, confirmed the significance of the discovery.
