In 2022, approximately 800,000 children in Tennessee — more than half the kids in the state — lived in households facing financial hardship, according to numbers from the United Way.
That includes more than 270,000 kids who live below the federal poverty line and 530,000 children who live in a specialized category of families who are asset limited, income constrained and employed. Those families generally earn more than the poverty level but not enough to afford basic needs like rent, health care or food.
