The Almajiri refers to a system of Islamic education practised in northern Nigeria. A male child seeking Islamic knowledge is called Almajiri, the female is Almajira, and the plural is Almajirai. The Almajiri system encourages guardians to cede parental responsibilities to Islamic schools.
