The Australian government is increasing childcare workers’ pay by 15% in two stages—10% this December and 5% in December 2025—due to concerns over their low wages. This interim increase is expected to be a baseline until the Fair Work Commission completes its investigation into the appropriate pay for early childhood education and care workers. Currently, childcare workers are among the lowest-paid, earning an average of $31.20 per hour, less than many other occupations. Despite their critical role in nurturing and developing children, the Fair Work Commission recognizes that childcare workers’ compensation is not reflective of their responsibilities and skills.
