Oman Cancels Compulsory French and German Classes, Introduces Chinese Language

Oman’s Ministry of Education has decided to end the compulsory teaching of French and German, as outlined in Ministerial Decision No. 192/2024. This decision aims to diversify foreign language education by introducing new languages, such as Chinese. The new policy replaces earlier decisions that mandated the teaching of French and German. While these languages will no longer be compulsory, they will still be available as elective subjects for students in grades 11 and 12 in select governorates, including Muscat, North Batinah, and South Batinah. The responsibilities for language programs will now fall under a newly established Foreign Language Curriculum Department.
