Clarity Lacking on New Cell Rules in Ontario Schools: Critics

Starting this week, Ontario schools are implementing new rules that ban cellphone use in classrooms to reduce distractions. Students from kindergarten to Grade 6 must keep phones silent and out of sight all day, while those in Grades 7 to 12 are prohibited from using phones during class unless permitted for specific needs. Although the Ontario government aims to standardize and improve focus, critics, including teachers’ unions, express concerns about enforcement and potential challenges, such as handling damaged or stolen phones and managing student reactions. Education Minister Jill Dunlop emphasized that the government will support educators in enforcing these new standards and managing the change in classroom culture.
