Western Sydney families struggling to find places in ‘childcare deserts’ worried about cost-of-living

Tasmia Rahman never thought that finding a place in childcare for her five-month-old son would be so difficult.

The 31-year-old architect and new mother from Guildford, in Sydney’s south-west, has applied to at least four childcare centres.

But each time she has lodged an application, she has been knocked back or put on a one- to two-year waiting list.

“It’s very stressful because you want to get back to work … because it’s me and my husband only,” she said.
