In September, the Mississippi Department of Education highlights Attendance Awareness Month. The 2024 Chronic Absenteeism Report shows a slight 0.3% increase in absenteeism statewide. In response, the Moss Point School District has introduced new truancy initiatives, focusing on increasing attendance through parental involvement. The district’s approach includes tracking attendance closely and engaging both students and parents in discussions about attendance issues. Moss Point now has dedicated truancy teams at each school, aiming to maintain high attendance rates and support student learning. This year, Escatawpa Upper Elementary has improved its attendance rates to around 90%, a significant increase from previous years.
