I chose a name for my son that closely resembles the name of my stepson, and my husband didn’t have any objections to it.

Living in Italy, naming conventions often follow a pattern where the firstborn son is named after the husband’s father, or the firstborn daughter after the husband’s mother, and so on. Despite not wanting to strictly adhere to this tradition, I chose to honour loved ones who had passed away when naming my children. Five years ago, my daughter Antonia was named after my late grandmother, and when I became pregnant with a son, I knew I wanted to name him Nicola, after my great-grandfather.

However, this decision posed a dilemma, as my husband’s son from a previous relationship was named Nicolo. Despite concerns about similarity and respect, my husband and I decided to proceed with naming our son Nicola.

While I’ve pondered whether this decision was appropriate, it was primarily driven by the desire to honour my great-grandfather, who played a significant role in shaping my family’s history and allowing me to establish roots in Italy. Despite never meeting him, his legacy profoundly influenced my life, making naming my son after him a deeply meaningful choice.
