Oklahoma Schools Head Ryan Walters: Teachers Who Won’t Teach Bible Could Lose License

Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters mandated that all schools teach students in grades five through 12 about the Bible’s influence on American history and stock a Bible in every classroom. Teachers who refuse to comply could face consequences up to and including the revocation of their teaching license, as per Walters’ instructions. Critics, including civil liberties and religious groups like the Jewish Federation of Tulsa and the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, argue that the mandate unfairly promotes Christianity in public education. The group Americans United for Separation of Church and State condemned Walters’ actions as an abuse of public office to impose religious beliefs on students and is exploring legal responses.
