12-Year-Old Girl Died After Parents Treated ‘Serious Life-Threatening’ Injuries with Smoothies, Say Police

A 12-year-old girl from Texas, Miranda Sipps, died on August 12 after her mother and stepfather allegedly failed to seek medical help for her severe injuries. The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office reported that the girl had life-threatening injuries from August 8 but did not receive medical attention until she went into respiratory distress. Authorities found that her parents, Denise Balbaneda and Gerald Gonzales, attempted to care for her at home and used remedies like a smoothie with vitamins, despite her being unconscious. They were arrested on August 13 and charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury by omission.
