Black-Colored Plastic used for Kitchen Utensils and Toys Linked to Banned Toxic Flame Retardants

A recent study has found that black plastic used in children’s toys, takeout containers, and kitchen utensils may contain high levels of toxic flame retardants, likely leaching from recycled electronic products. For example, black plastic pirate coin beads contained up to 22,800 parts per million of flame retardants. The most hazardous flame retardants identified are linked to electronic enclosures, indicating contamination during recycling processes. One product tested, a black plastic sushi tray, contained 11,900 parts per million of decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE), a banned chemical due to its cancer and developmental risks.
