Rena Frasco, now assistant superintendent of Morgan County School District RE-3, once implemented the “principal on porch” programme at Pioneer Elementary School in Fort Morgan to address student absences. This initiative involved visiting students’ homes to encourage them to attend school regularly, emphasising the importance of building relationships with students and families. Now, Frasco and the Fort Morgan school district are exploring new strategies to tackle inconsistent attendance patterns, reflecting a statewide effort among 20 school districts to address chronic absenteeism exacerbated by the pandemic. Factors contributing to absences include post-pandemic adjustments, such as returning to pre-pandemic attendance norms and addressing complex issues like students working night shifts to support their families, particularly among Hispanic and refugee communities in Fort Morgan.
