Howard County parent sues school system; son became quadriplegic following sports practice

A Howard County mother has filed a federal lawsuit against the school district and several unnamed district employees on behalf of her son who, the suit alleges, wasn’t provided proper emergency medical assistance after he suffered a cardiac arrest at a sports practice and is now quadriplegic.

The complaint filed Friday by Janet Kena in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland alleges that school staff violated her son’s right to bodily integrity and due process in failing to take precautions and administer emergency medical aid. The Howard County Public School System’s supervision and training policies also “fell woefully short,” the complaint says, displaying “deliberate indifference” to his constitutional rights.
