Despite never missing mortgage payments, families struggled with increasing HOA fees during the COVID pandemic. Villela, who lived in a Green Valley Ranch home for 19 years, tearfully shared her family’s plight at a lawmakers’ committee hearing. The situation has led to foreclosures approved by associations, prompting lawmakers to introduce reform bills to regulate associations and metropolitan districts. The proposed legislation aims to protect homeowners from losing their homes over minor violations and encourage settlements between homeowners and associations.
