School Bus Driver, Safety Monitors Fired After 4-Year-Old Boy Left Behind on Unattended Bus

Following an incident in Rhode Island, a bus driver and safety monitors have been terminated after a 4-year-old boy was left unattended on a school bus. The child, enrolled in a summer program, was inadvertently left on the bus after the morning route concluded. Staff at Fishing Cove Elementary initially marked him absent, believing he had not attended school. The boy was later found unharmed at a nearby municipal building. Authorities have stated no criminal charges will be pursued. The North Kingstown Superintendent described the incident as shocking and unacceptable, emphasizing it does not align with district safety standards. An internal investigation has been initiated, and measures including terminations, re-training for staff, and enhanced safety protocols are being implemented to regain community trust in the school transportation system.
