March 7 2024- A controversial law in Missouri, in effect for 50 years, prohibits pregnant women from getting divorced. The legislation, originally intended to prevent the “bastardization” of a child, aims to protect families by making it illegal for pregnant couples to divorce before the mother gives birth. Recently, Democratic state representative Ashley Aune sponsored House Bill 2402, with bipartisan support from Rep. Richard Brown and Rep. Sherri Gallick, seeking to overturn this law. The bill challenges the long-standing restriction and reflects a push for change in the state’s legal approach to divorces involving pregnant women.
