Far-right activists push changes to Louisiana’s early childhood education

March 19 2024- An ultra-conservative movement is on the brink of influencing Louisiana’s early childhood education standards, aiming to remove what it perceives as policies that promote viewpoints it opposes. A committee of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) approved the revisions without discussion, likely to gain full approval at BESE’s meeting. With a Republican majority on the board, supported by GOP Gov. Jeff Landry, the changes target the emphasis on social and emotional learning (SEL), criticized as a gateway to topics like racial and social justice.
