Indian schoolgirl who became a film star and won an Oscar back living in poverty

Pinki Sonkar, an Indian schoolgirl who gained fame after starring in the Oscar-winning documentary “Smile Pinki” about her cleft lip surgery, has returned to poverty. Despite her moment in the spotlight, including attending the Academy Awards and tossing the coin at Wimbledon, she now lives in a house without a door in her village in Uttar Pradesh. At 18, she reflects that little has changed for her since the documentary, despite the initial hope for a better life.
