The Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) has criticized the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for mishandling affairs related to Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) graduates from polytechnics. NISLT emphasizes that SLT is a professional course managed by the Institute, which is responsible for licensing practitioners in the field. In a statement by Director General Yemi H. Gbadegesin, NISLT outlined several missteps by the NBTE, including the introduction of top-up degree programs without consultation with the National Universities Commission (NUC) and failing to honor a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NISLT. They noted that despite requests to review the MoU, NBTE has ignored these calls and allowed unregistered SLT lecturers—90% of whom are not NISLT members—to operate in polytechnics, undermining professional standards.
